Hypnotherapy: How and Why It Works
Many of us want to break our unhealthy habits such as smoking or excessive drinking, habits that have a negative impact on our day to day lives. Hypnotherapy breaks bad habits and also helps manage or remove anxieties, limiting beliefs, and anger issues for example. It can build confidence or calm your stress levels and responses. Hypnosis is safe for older children and may be beneficial to them in the right circumstances. It’s a wonderfully versatile tool for all manner of things including weight loss.
How Hypnosis Works
Hypnosis is similar to daydreaming. Remember a time when you were so enthralled in a movie, a book, or staring out the window in school? Those moments are much like hypnosis. Hypnosis is a trance-like, focused state, used to treat a specific issue.
While daydreaming is a form of self-hypnosis, unfortunately, our daydreams are sometimes imaginings of worst-case scenarios (creating anxiety, and fear), and what we hold in our mind tends to become our reality. It is said that the unconscious mind doesn’t distinguish between real and imagined.
Hypnotherapy acts as a mental tune-up to interrupt the old thought patterns and correct or adjust them. Positive visualizations are a great way of retraining the mind but it’s a skill we aren’t instinctively born with. Also, there are many other ways of viewing the events that have made us who we are, and yet we only know what we know. A skilled hypnotherapist will highlight those other perspectives and bring out your strengths.
Why Hypnosis Works
As we go about our daily life, we consciously deal with all manner of things. But what about all those things we do without thought (habits, reflex behaviors like movement and speech), and all those amazing bodily functions that we couldn’t control even if we wanted to. The subconscious mind deals with those things; it controls 90% of everything we do each day. If it didn’t, we’d be overwhelmed with things to micromanage. It is the most powerful part of you, and it’s beyond your control.
In hypnotherapy, we become less analytical and more suggestible. That subconscious part is accessible and can be influenced to make helpful changes. It may sound complicated but in truth, it’s a very easy, and yet effective way of changing our lives. The changes often begin almost immediately.
